While browsing IMDB, I discovered a credit on Maria Bello’s page that brought it all back. This early exposure to ghost stories sparked an interest that would continue to grow until I became the full-on horror obsessed freak I am today.Īs formative as this book was, I confess that I hadn't really thought about it in years - until recently, when it unexpectedly crossed my path again. I would sit in a chair behind our Christmas tree and read the haunting tale of a young girl who befriends a lonely and dangerous ghost (because yeah, I was that kid). I would reread that book a number of times before finally graduating to Fear Street, Christopher Pike, and eventually Stephen King.

I fell so in love with the story that I soon bought my own copy - a copy that would become well-worn and tattered over the years.

Wait Till Helen Comes was one of my early doorways into horror and ghost stories, and by walking through it, I was be forever changed. But no, for me, the life changing book was a YA novel by Mary Downing Hahn. I know I’m probably supposed to be noting a classic of some sort - Dickens, Doyle, Austen - I don’t know what classics a ten year old would read. So pull out the pumpkins and ghost decor, and get ready-because once you start reading, you won’t be able to wait to see what happens when Helen comes. When I was ten or eleven, I discovered a book at our local library that changed my life forever.

Mary Downing Hahn truly has accomplished the impossible by creating a ghastly spine-chiller that the whole family can enjoy again, and again, and again. This is now the third time I’ve read this book and I still find myself surprised and satisfied by both the story and the characters. The second time I read this book, I was studying literature in college, wanting to find a quick read to soothe my Halloween fever. This book, similar to many of Stine’s novels, was terrifying enough to quench my thrill-seeking thirst, yet wholesome enough to stave off the nightmares. The first time I read this book, I was in fourth grade and obsessed with R. While this book will certainly scare your socks off, it will also remind you of the importance of family and show you how a little bit of love can go a long way to mend a broken heart. Their casual attitude quickly changes, however, when Heather declares that soon Helen will come and get revenge on Molly and Michael for being so mean, making them wonder if Helen isn’t so imaginary after all. When Molly, Michael, and their annoying new stepsister, Heather, move into an old church building with an attached graveyard, they aren’t too surprised to find that Heather now has an imaginary friend named Helen. Horror books for the whole family do exist! If you don’t believe me, head upstairs to junior fiction and pick up Wait Till Helen Comes: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn.
